Sen. Jeff Flake visits Meghan McCain, ‘View’ on her birthday

PHOENIX — Outgoing U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake and Meghan McCain, daughter of his mentor, John McCain, reminisced about the late Arizona political icon Tuesday on TV’s “The View.”

“I miss him horribly,” Flake said to McCain, a co-host on the show, who was celebrating her birthday. John McCain died in August after a yearlong battle with a rare form of brain cancer.

The Republican senators had worked together since Flake’s election in 2013. John McCain served six terms.

Flake, who paid tribute to his friend on the Senate floor two days after McCain’s death, added that “If John McCain could have put ‘The View’ on the Senate Cloakroom every day, he would have. There was nothing that made him happier than to talk about your success.”

He eventually presented her with a small potted cactus.

McCain shared with the audience that Flake had visited the family at their ranch outside Sedona the day before her father died and later said, “I’m so sad you’re leaving office.”

Flake announced a year ago that he wouldn’t run for re-election. His term ends in January.

The topic turned to the Senate confirmation hearing of Brett Kavanaugh, which Flake delayed by calling for further investigation of sexual assault claims made against the Supreme Court nominee.

Before the hearing, Flake was confronted by two women as he stood in an elevator.

He was visibly affected by their women telling him they had been assaulted.

“The president (Donald Trump) said they were paid protesters or whatnot, I don’t believe that. They had a story to tell and they wanted me to hear it — and it was effective, too,” Flake said.

“The #MeToo movement is real and needed and good. I felt for them, you could tell it was genuine.”
