PHOENIX – A Scottsdale teenager has made the cut as a finalist for Time magazine and Nickelodeon’s Kid of the Year, the sponsors announced.

Dylan Capshaw, 14, was among 20 finalists for the inaugural award, organizers said recently. Judges will narrow the list to five and they will be featured in an hourlong TV special set to air Dec. 5, when the winner will be revealed.

The winner will be featured on a cover of Time.

The award was created to recognize youths who make a positive impact on the communities.

Capshaw earned his spot for starting nonprofits, one to help animal rescuers and the other to support frontline COVID workers.

He launched Dylan Capshaw Wildlife Foundation in 2017, raising funds for animal-rescue organizations such as Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital and Arizona Small Dog Rescue, according to the foundation website.

The teenager then set his mind on supplying health care workers with personal protection equipment. He began making 3D-printed masks and face shields to donate to doctors, nurses and first responders through For the Frontline.

His efforts expanded to Sanitation Stations, vending machines that sell PPE for businesses.

Each of the top five children will receive a $5,000 cash prize, and a spot as a reporter for Time for Kids magazine.

We want to hear from you.
