Scottsdale PD: Suspect shot by detectives during victim rescue in Mesa

PHOENIX – Scottsdale police detectives fatally shot a suspect Monday at a parking lot outside a Mesa restaurant, authorities said.

As a result, the intersection of Horne and Broadway roads, near Eagles Park, was closed in all directions as of around 12:30 p.m., the Scottsdale Police Department said.

Police gave the all clear on the area at about 2:15 p.m.

According to Scottsdale police, the special assignments unit located two suspects from a previous dangerous felony crime in a vehicle in the parking lot outside Moreno’s Mexican Grill .

Initially inside the vehicle were two suspects and one victim, who were all adult males. One of the suspects eventually left the vehicle to go inside the restaurant, according to authorities.

Once the suspect was inside the restaurant, detectives moved in on the vehicle to rescue the victim. While officers were recovering the victim, an officer shot the suspect, who was still in the vehicle.

Responding officers held their positions until additional support from the Mesa Police Department arrived, officials said.

The suspect who had gone inside the restaurant remained inside until they surrendered later to the Mesa Police Department’s SWAT Team without incident.

A SWAT medic at the scene pronounced the suspect in the vehicle dead at the scene.

No officers were shot, however, two officers sustained minor injuries.

Lowell and Holmes elementary schools, both in the area, were on lockdown at about noon as a result. Holmes’ lockdown was lifted around 1 p.m. while Lowell’s was lifted around 2 p.m.

Scottsdale police detectives and officers involved are on post-critical incident leave which is standard for the department.

The incident remains under investigation.
