PHOENIX – Scottsdale-based Axon announced Thursday the company signed a contract with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency to equip 3,800 border patrol agents with body-worn cameras.

The $13 million contract will provide cameras to the agents starting in the spring of 2021.

“Axon is proud to partner with the world class law enforcement agency that is the U.S. Border Patrol,” Axon Federal Vice President and General Manager Richard Coleman said in a press release Wednesday.

“We will increase agent safety and allow for more accountability with our new body camera program of record.”

The cameras, which feature Axon’s incident-drive video recording system, will help provide a layer of transparency for both border patrol agents and the public.

U.S. Border Patrol conducted a body-worn camera study in 2014 and a six-month operational evaluation in 2018, which determined the best locations for cameras to be deployed to.

Axon said the cameras will be released in phases to border patrol agents in San Diego, Yuma, Tucson, El Paso, Big Bend, Del Rio, Rio Grande Valley and Swanton sectors.
