PHOENIX — Scottsdale Airport will use $5.4 million in federal grant funding to improve its efficiency and capacity, officials announced.

Through two grants — nearly $4.7 million from Airport Improvement Grant Funds and $763,000 from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law — officials aim to combat the increasing capacity issues that leave a mix of aircraft types stuck competing to depart, according to a press release.

“This causes a bottleneck of aircraft at our runway end,” Aviation Director Gary Mascaro said in the release. “These grants support the importance of improving these capacity issues at Scottsdale Airport.”

The airport will begin construct this fall on an aircraft runup area, restore a taxiway connector and rebuild part of the taxiway and its connectors to current Federal Aviation Administration safety standards.

Completion is scheduled by the end of 2022.

Aviation and air traffic control staff designed a project that is set to include five aircraft run-up positions at the north end of the runway, the release said.

The spacing will allow the Air Traffic Control Tower to safely safely clear aircraft for take off.
