PHOENIX — Scottsdale became the latest city to approve of new rules aiming to better guide short-term rental owners and properties.

The new requirements include obtaining a Scottsdale license for each property, organizing sex offender and background checks on booking guests and having liability insurance, following a vote by the Scottsdale City Council on Oct. 25 unanimously in favor of the new rules.

It is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 8.

“This ordinance resulted from months of collaboration, and I am confident it will make a positive impact in our community,” Mayor David Ortega said in a press release.

Other provisions put in place include requiring pool barriers, pest control, providing working smoke alarms and garbage compliance.

Short-term rental vacations owners will be required to put an occupancy limit of no more than six adults and their children, as well as restrictions on use for large events like parties and weddings.

The requirement to provide property owner and emergency contact information to Scottsdale remains in place.

Mesa, Goodyear, Glendale and Paradise Valley are other cities across the Valley that have established new short-term rental guidelines in the past year.
