Republican Wendy Rogers announces run for Rep. Tom O’Halleran’s seat

Jan 23, 2018, 5:10 PM

PHOENIX — U.S. Rep. Tom O’Halleran will officially have another challenger in his fight to keep Arizona’s 1st Congressional District blue.

Republican Wendy Rogers announced her campaign for U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, with a Twitter video that outlined her priorities for office.

“We must repeal Obamacare for the sake of our nation’s health and resolve illegal immigration, which threatens national security. We must build the wall and end sanctuary cities once and for all,” Rogers said in the video.

“Respect for the rule of law has eroded. Our nation’s very identity and history are under attack, with liberals trying to erase Columbus, Washington, and Jefferson.

“It’s up to us to protect the most vulnerable – our unborn and the elderly; as well as our very own families with our God-given right to keep and bear arms under the 2nd Amendment. Our strained, but steadfast, military is our last bulwark. America’s veterans are precious,” she added.

Rogers, who is a retired Air Force officer, touted her military history and support of President Donald Trump as some of the reasons why voters should choose her over another contender.

“I swore my life’s oath to secure the United States against ‘all enemies, foreign and domestic.’ I will do this again as your congresswoman,” Rogers said.

According to Pinal Central, Rogers will join local farmer Tiffany Shedd and state Sen. Steve Smith of Maricopa in seeking the Republican nomination.

But Rogers is no stranger to campaigning: This is her fourth consecutive election cycle running for Congress, per Arizona Capitol Times reporter Jeremy Duda, and second straight run for the 1st Congressional District.

Rogers ran for the same spot in 2016, but lost out to former Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. Babeu later lost to O’Halleran in the November 2016 election.

Rogers also ran for Arizona’s 9th Congressional District in 2012 and 2014. She won the Republican nomination the second time, but lost to Kyrsten Sinema.

Sinema is currently running for U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake’s seat. Flake announced last year that he would not seek re-election.
