PHOENIX — The August employment report released Thursday by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity showed that the state has recovered 100% of private sector jobs since the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic.

About 325,000 jobs in the Grand Canyon State have been recovered since April 2020 to bring the private sector employment total to 2,572,000, according to the report.

Arizona is outpacing the national recovery, which is 79% of the way back for private sector jobs.

“The last year and a half have challenged Arizonans like never before,” Gov. Doug Ducey said in a press release. “But thanks to the ingenuity and perseverance of our hard-working employees and business community, Arizona’s recovery is in full swing, with a real momentum headed in the right direction.”

Arizona’s job recovery has been aided by a strong bounce back in trade, transportation and utility industries.

Since April 2020, 163% of job losses — about 75,000 jobs — from those industries have been recovered, according to the report.

Arizona leisure and hospitality jobs have been recovered by 83%, accounting for 121,000 positions.

The job recovery also led to unemployment falling by 13,000 people between July and August.

In total, Arizona is 97% recovered on all jobs lost from the pandemic.

“We will continue to work hard to make sure Arizonans have ample opportunity to reenter the workforce, access new skills and get back to work,” Ducey said.
