Renovated viewing area opens at Falcon Field Airport in Mesa

Jul 5, 2022, 11:30 AM

PHOENIX — Visitors at the Falcon Field Airport in Mesa can now observe aircraft through the renovated viewing area next to the terminal building.

The capitol improvement project funded by Falcon Field Airport is open daily and can be reached directly from the terminal building parking lot, with the sidewalk leading to the park painted with authentic runway markings, the city of Mesa said in a press release.

Improvements included the addition of a clear plexiglass view fence facing out to the airfield, benches for seating, two airplane-shaped seats for children and benches for seating in front of the view fence, as well as picnic tables and chairs, the release said.

“This area offers Mesa residents of all ages an opportunity to share in the excitement of flight and aviation,” District 5 Councilmember David Luna said in the release.

“It supports the city council’s priority of placemaking and cultivating unique, vibrant spaces for residents and visitors.”

The renovations added to the free binoculars and 16 historic murals that were installed in recent years at the viewing area as a way to commemorate Falcon Field’s role as a training base for British Royal Air Force and U.S. Army Air Corps pilots during World War II.

“This viewing area is special not only because of its aviation theme, but also because it highlights our past while focusing on the promise of what aviation brings to the future of our community and its economic vitality,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said in the release.
