Rain pounds parts of Phoenix area early Wednesday

PHOENIX – Rain fell hard and fast over parts of metro Phoenix early Wednesday as predictions of wet weather came true.

Thunder boomed and lightning flashed across the sky from northwest Phoenix to Gilbert. Some commuters slid across freeway lanes and crashed but none shut down the roads.

Thousands lost power on day when the high is expected to reach 106 degrees. The Valley’s main power providers, Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project, have maps showing the location, size and status of active outages. Find the APS map here and the SRP map here.

Most of the outages were restored by mid-morning, but more than 1,000 SRP customers in Estrella Village were still without power as of 10 a.m.

“We might have another shot at some thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening, but at least for now it looks like this is the prime period for any kind of rain,” National Weather Service Phoenix bureau meteorologist Andrew Deemer told KTAR News 92.3 FM during the monsoon storm.

The Maricopa County Flood Control District reported South Mountain Park logged nearly 1.5 inches of rain by around 8 a.m., more than an inch of rain had hit Tolleson and almost that much came down on the Ahwatukee area of Phoenix.

Officials in Avondale said streets were flooded and trees were down.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Maricopa County that will end at 9:15 a.m.

A flash flood warning was put in place central Arizona and is set to expire at 11 a.m.
