President-elect Joe Biden maintains Arizona lead over Donald Trump

Nov 8, 2020, 4:11 PM | Updated: 7:11 pm

PHOENIX – President-elect Joe Biden maintained his lead over President Donald Trump in Arizona on Sunday, according to the Arizona Secretary of State’s website.

In the latest update, Trump gained 2,999 votes but continued to trail Biden, who tallied an additional 3,753 votes. Biden continued to lead Trump 1,636,934 votes to 1,616,832 votes statewide.

The update included around 7,000 ballots reported by Maricopa County.

The next update from Maricopa County is expected on Monday, according to the Maricopa County Elections Department.

According to Arizona.Vote, there are approximately 93,997 ballots left to be processed across the state.

On Saturday, the Associated Press projected that Biden has unseated Republican Donald Trump to become the 46th president of the United States.

Across the nation, Biden has received more than 73 million votes nationally, the most in history.

The Associated Press projected Biden winning Arizona shortly after election night, after an analysis of ballots cast statewide concluded there were not enough outstanding to allow Trump to catch up.

Trump’s campaign, the Republican National Committee and the Arizona Republican Party jointly filed a lawsuit Saturday arguing that poll center workers in Maricopa County were incorrectly rejecting in-person ballots on Election Day.

According to the lawsuit, numerous voters said they were alerted by the electronic tabulation machine that the ballot had a “facial irregularity.” They were told by poll center workers to press a “green button” on the machine in order to override the issue. The lawsuit alleged these voters had their ballots disregarded because there was no further inspection.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
