PHOENIX – Sunday marks the six-year anniversary since 19 members of the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew lost their lives protecting the community from the Yarnell Hill Fire. Prescott plans a weekend-long tribute to honor the hotshot crew.

The 19 firefighters died June 30, 2013, in deadliest wildland blaze in the country since 1933.

The fire had ignited June 28.

The Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew Learning and Tribute Center will be hosting the Central Arizona Fire and Medical Honor Guard on Saturday and will also showcase a commemorative wreath.

The wreath will be viewable to the public throughout the weekend Center board members will be in attendance to greet visitors and answers question.

The day’s tributes will continue when the Granite Mountain Gourd Society will hold gourd dances from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Frontier Village Shopping Center.

At exactly 4:42 p.m. on the anniversary Sunday, the bell at the Yavapai County Courthouse will ring 19 times.

Similar to the county courthouse’s plans, there will be a ringing of bells at Yarnell Memorial Park and speakers will include the new head of Arizona State Parks and other dignitaries.

An Arizona State park dedicated to the hotshots opened in 2016.
