SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Last year, 27 children drowned in swimming pools. This year, there have been at least 14 pool-related drowning incidents involving children, and summer has technically yet to begin.

But even with repeated warnings to parents to install pool fences, many people are saying that more needs to be done to prevent pool drownings.

“Gate latches can be unlatched, and not closed completely. They can get old and break. Children can even fit through the opening in the fence if it doesn’t go around the pool,” said Nicole Farr with the Arizona Insurance Council.”

Having a pool fence is better than not having one. However, Farr recommends taking a layered approach to pool safety.

“Don’t only have a gate, but also have automatic sliding glass doors, or have better latches on those doors,” said Farr.

Farr also said having a pool fence gate with an alarm is helpful because it will alert parents if the gate has been opened, or hasn’t closed completely.

Also, gate latches should be over 5 feet high so they can’t be opened.

Even with more prevention methods in place, it’s still up to parents to be more aware. According to Farr, parents are most distracted from watching their children during a phone call.

“Take the phone outside with you when you get a call, because that way you never have to take your eyes off of the pool,” said Farr.
