PHOENIX —  The city of Phoenix has enacted a proactive approach to coronavirus as it prepares to host the Democratic Party’s presidential debate on Sunday at the Arizona Federal Theatre.

The city is in daily contact with public health officials, the venue and CNN as the debate approaches, according to a press release.

“We understand the responsibility that comes with hosting an event under these circumstances,” Gallego said in the release.

“We are taking strong precautions, and, most importantly, breaking down communication silos. From now until post-debate we will be convening these stakeholders daily to discuss precautions we are taking.”

As of Monday, the city of Phoenix was proceeding with the understanding that the debate will be held as scheduled, the release stated.

On Tuesday, CNN, which is broadcasting the debate, said there have been no talks about canceling.

The Phoenix debate is set to begin at 5 p.m. and will be the Democratic Party’s 11th — and smallest — of the 2020 presidential campaign.

Although U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii is still in the race, recent qualifying rules established by the Democratic National Committee requiring a candidate to have 20% of convention delegates from state primary contests will prohibit her participation in the debate.
