Phoenix middle school student arrested for bringing gun to school, police say

PHOENIX — A Phoenix student was arrested on Thursday morning after showing up to Kyrene Altadeña Middle School with a firearm, authorities said.
A school resource officer responded to the scene near Desert Foothills Parkway and Chandler Boulevard around 8:30 a.m. after staff reported the situation, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Why Phoenix student was arrested
The officer established probable cause and arrested the student for misconduct involving weapons.
The student was booked into a juvenile corrections facility.
There was no threat to Kyrene Altadeña Middle School or any specific students, police said.
No further details were revealed as this is an ongoing investigation.
Other Valley students recently arrested for bringing guns to school
It’s not the first time a student in the Valley has been arrested for bringing a gun to school this year.
On Nov. 19, Tempe police arrested a 15-year-old boy after he allegedly brought a gun to Marcos de Niza High School campus.
Additionally, a Phoenix high schooler was arrested after officers found a gun in the student’s backpack, police said.
Authorities have recently been on high alert about dangers targeting Arizona students — especially as reports find that firearms are one of the top causes of death for children across the state.
On Monday, Arizona education officials said they voted to make $48 million in school safety funding available for schools to hire armed campus officers and counselors.
