PHOENIX — No, it’s not the Monday blues, it’s just Phoenix’s record streak of daily heat reaching three weeks.
The thermometer at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official records, hit 101 degrees at 2:40 p.m. The previous record of 100 degrees was set in 2020.
Phoenix’s streak of 21 days of record heat is triple its previous high. The city has bested daily heat records 19 times and tied two more since the streak began Sept. 24.
Is Phoenix’s record streak of daily heat ending this week?
Yes, Phoenix’s daily heat record streak is about to end, maybe as soon as Tuesday.
The forecast calls for highs in the 90s for Tuesday-Thursday before it finally starts resembling fall with highs in 70s and 80s through the rest of the week and weekend. In fact, the overnight temperatures could dip into the 50s this weekend.
Even so, that won’t make Phoenicians feel better about this record stretch of heat.
Halfway through the month, Phoenix is on pace for its hottest October ever after setting average heat records for June and September this year.
In fact, it’s been at least 100 every day since Sept. 23, the second day of fall.
And until this year, it had never reached 110 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city’s official readings, after Sept. 19. But it’s reached that mark nine times later than that date this year, most recently on Oct. 7.
