Phoenix police shoot man who was allegedly acting erratically, throwing rocks

PHOENIX — Phoenix police on Monday shot a man who was allegedly acting erratically and throwing rocks and bottles at cars and businesses, authorities said.
The incident occurred near Seventh Street and Bell Road around 4:30 p.m., Sgt. Phil Krynsky of the Phoenix Police Department Public Affairs Bureau said in a press conference.
The suspect allegedly took off on foot with a rock in hand when officers attempted to contact him, authorities said, and police pursued him into the parking lot of a restaurant.
The suspect allegedly walked toward the door of the restaurant, authorities said, ignoring officer commands to stop and drop the rock.
The officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was hit more than once, authorities said.
The man fell into the business where officers applied first aid, including a tourniquet, authorities said.
He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
No officers or community members were injured in the incident.
There was damage to multiple businesses and vehicles, authorities said.
“When we perceive a threat to ourselves or to a third party, we have to take action,” Krynsky said. “Every situation presents different circumstances.”
It was the 10th shooting of the year by Phoenix police and 20th overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
An investigation was ongoing and there was no additional information available.
