PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix said an officer was injured Monday when two suspects in a car that had been reported stolen struck a patrol vehicle during a confrontation.

Sgt. Maggie Cox told KTAR News 92.3 FM an officer shot at the sedan that nearly ran them down near 19th and Dunlap avenues.

The injuries to the officer, a 28-year-old with two years of service time, weren’t serious, she said.

The suspects’ car, a dark gray 2006 Nissan Altima bearing Arizona license plate number CVE6090, rammed the door of the police unit, Cox said, which hit the officer.

“The suspect vehicle continued to flee,” Cox said, heading south on Interstate 17 near Indian School Road.

ABC15 video showed police vehicles swarming the Hometowne Studios motel parking lot.

Officers had been patrolling the area when they ran the license plate of a car in a convenience store parking lot. The plate got a hit as belonging to a stolen car.

The car eventually ended up at another nearby parking lot. When officers went to make contact with the drivers, Cox said the suspects drove the car toward them and hit the passenger door.

The driver of the vehicle is described as a Black male between 20-25 years old who was wearing a black hat, red bandana and a black shirt.

The passenger is also a male but no other information on him was immediately known.

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident send tips to 602-262-6151 or the Silent Witness website.

It was the 14th shooting of the year involving Phoenix police, according to KTAR News research.
