PHOENIX — Phoenix police say that one suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting near a substation at the corner of 39th Avenue and Cactus Road on Saturday.

Police and paramedics were seen in the area blocking an intersection near the Phoenix Police Cactus Park Precinct with caution tape.

Officers responded to a call that a man with a sword was striking the fence at a police station, authorities said.

When they arrived, they allegedly found 40-year-old Aaron Baughman with a samurai sword by the employee gate of the precinct.

Officers ordered him to drop the weapon, but he allegedly moved towards them with the sword raised.

That’s when the shooting occurred, authorities said.

Baughman was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

According to police, there were no injuries to the officers or other community members.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
