PHOENIX — Police found a deceased fetus in the middle of a Phoenix street early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Officers responded to a call of an injured person and a child in the street near Washington Street and Seventh Avenue just before 1 a.m.

When authorities arrived on the scene it was discovered that it was a dead fetus lying in the road.

The gestational age of the fetus was believed to be between 20 and 24 weeks, Phoenix police said in a release.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the fetus pending a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death, according to police.

Police said the area where the fetus was found is the largest homeless encampment in the city, just west of downtown.

No additional information was made available.

Detectives are gathering details and the investigation is ongoing.
