PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix said they fatally shot an armed robbery suspect after a car chase late Tuesday night.

The Phoenix Police Department said the man was pronounced dead near 16th Street and Southern Avenue around 11 p.m.

A woman in the car was detained, police said.

Officers were in the area of Third Street and Southern Avenue when they saw a vehicle that matched the description of one that had been used in an armed robbery earlier in the day, police said.

Police said officers tried to stop the car but the driver kept going before crashing into a fence around a house.

The suspect and the woman were told multiple times to show their hands, police said. When the man showed a firearm, officers shot him.

Officers got the woman out of the car and tried again to get the man to show his hands. After not getting a response from him, they went closer to the car. Once there, they found a firearm inside, police said.

Emergency medical personnel from the Phoenix Fire Department could not revive the suspect.

The deceased man was later identified as 34-year-old Enrique Alcarez. Police said Thursday that one of his gunshot wounds was self-inflicted.

An examination by the Medical Examiner’s Office was pending, and the investigation was ongoing.
