PHOENIX – Police in Phoenix said officers fatally shot a man they said was armed and struggling with them early Tuesday near a popular resort.
The man later identified as Antonio Carbajal, 23, died near the Arizona Grand Resort at Interstate 10 and Baseline Road on the Tempe border.
Police said in an email they spotted a vehicle just after midnight that had eluded law enforcement on two other occasions. An air unit tracked the vehicle as it made its way onto resort grounds. Carbajal, whose name was released Wednesday, had gotten out of the vehicle and run off, they said.
Three officers chased down the man on foot. The officer who reached unidentified man first tried to make the arrest but a struggle for the man’s handgun followed.
The other two officers reached the scene and each fired their weapons at the man. He went down and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officers are a 29-year-old man with two years of service and a 24-year-old man with three years of service.
It was the second shooting of the year involving Phoenix police, and third overall by Valley law enforcement, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
