PHOENIX — A U.S. District judge sentenced a Phoenix man to 12 years in prison for a deadly human smuggling-related crash last week, authorities said.

Kevin Rojo-Barron, 21, killed three members of the Tohono O’odham Nation last March, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona.

He had been speeding his vehicle northbound on Federal Route 1 and failed to yield at a stop sign near the State Route 86 intersection, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Did Phoenix man plead guilty?

His vehicle struck another vehicle carrying the three tribe members, all of whom died due to crash-related injuries.

Rojo-Barron had been smuggled four undocumented migrants at the time of the crash, prosecutors said. Additionally, he had an AR-15 style rifle in his car.

One of the migrants died in the crash. Another was permanently injured.

Rojo-Barron pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport — and actually transporting — undocumented migrants for results resulting in death on July 18.
