PHOENIX — It’s a girl! Banner Health welcomed its first baby of the new year Wednesday morning.

Baby Zoé was born at 12:30 a.m. at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix. The healthy baby girl weighed 8 pounds and 1 ounce. She measured 20 inches.

“I’m very excited and happy,” the mother, Monica, told KTAR News 92.3 FM over the phone in Spanish. “I’m also surprised because her due date was tomorrow. I never imagined she would be the first baby born in 2020.”

Monica said she and the baby’s father, Edgar, picked the name Zoé because they liked the meaning behind it. She said it means life in Greek.

This is Monica’s third daughter. She said her 3-year-old and 2-year-old can’t wait to meet their little sister.

“They’re going to get along very well,” she said.
