PHOENIX — Phoenix Children’s broke ground Wednesday on its freestanding emergency department and multi-specialty clinic in Avondale.

The hospital is constructing a 71,250-square-foot, three-story medical office building and will retrofit the existing 35,000-square-foot building to provide emergency services.

Robert Meyer, president and CEO, told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the two buildings will be expected to handle a combined 100,000 visits per year.

“It’s the next step in the journey of where we need to go and it’s all based on the growth in the West Valley,” Meyer said.

The campus, located at Avondale Boulevard and McDowell Road, will provide a closer location for pediatric care in the West Valley.

The emergency department will provide 24/7 emergency care through 40 rooms that include triage, treatment and resuscitation rooms.

The multi-specialty clinic, located next door, will offer several specialized services including cardiology and developmental pediatrics.

Currently, the clinic has 27 patient rooms and that total will jump to 68 following construction.

“This emergency department will fill a need here,” Aaron Glass, deputy chief with Avondale Fire and Medical, said. “This gives us an option to bring less serious [injured] kids here.”

About 130 Phoenix Children’s employees will work from the West Valley location. Half of those jobs will be new positions.

A full opening is slated for spring of 2023.
