Old West Valley firehouse being repurposed as a library

PHOENIX – A “wallbreaking” ceremony was held Monday as the first step toward turning an old West Valley firehouse into a new library.

The 6,100-square-foot building on El Mirage Road south of Thunderbird Road in El Mirage will include space for a programming room.

It will replace the Maricopa County Library District’s 2,500-square-foot facility on First Avenue, a few blocks away.

The project, a partnership between the city and county, is expected to open next summer.

El Mirage Mayor Alexis Hermosillo and Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman were among the officials who took hammers to the firehouse walls during Monday’s ceremony.

“I’m really excited that this library will enrich our community and provide even more opportunities for our children and families,” Hermosillo said.

The El Mirage branch is one of 18 locations that make up the Maricopa County Library District.

El Mirage is located about 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix and has about 35,000 residents.
