PHOENIX — The Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety released its enforcement statistics from Labor Day weekend, and 471 people statewide were arrested for driving under the influence.

That is a downtick from the 490 in 2021, although total traffic stops rose from 11,193 to 11,251.

The statistics were taken from Sept. 2-5.

DUI misdemeanors accounted for 403 of the 471 arrests, while 68 people were arrested for an aggravated DUI, a class 4 felony.

Meanwhile, 82 people were arrested for extreme DUI for having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 or higher.

DUI drug arrests made up 167 of the cases.

Nineteen of the DUI arrests over the weekend were made of those under 21 years old. That’s also a slight decrease from last year’s 22.

“These statistics are the result of the dedication and training of police and highway patrol officers, sheriff deputies, volunteers and other law enforcement personnel that comprise the DUI Task Forces throughout Arizona,” Alberto Gutier, director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, said in a press release.

“Our goal is to reduce crashes, fatalities and injuries on our streets and highways by enforcing DUI and traffic laws in our state.”

There were 2,377 law enforcement officials participating, 184 more than last year.
