PHOENIX — Monsoon season is set to make its first notable presence in metro Phoenix this week.

Wind, dust and some rain are in the forecast as early as Monday evening and could continue up until the Fourth of July holiday on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The wind and dust will be bigger threats to Valley residents, NWS forecaster Mark O’Malley told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

“If you’re living in Phoenix, don’t count on big deluges this week,” O’Malley said. “It’s still early monsoon, so there may be a few people that get good rain but probably most people will be disappointed.”

Wind gusts could reach 30 mph Monday and 35 mph Tuesday before weakening later in the week.

O’Malley said parts of the Valley could get up to a quarter-inch of rain by the end of the week but a tenth of an inch is more likely.

Rain chances will remain between 30%-50% through Sunday, according to NWS.

“We’re looking at a gradual increase in monsoon activity throughout the week,” O’Malley said.

The rain should drop temperatures all week.

Monday’s high is expected to reach 109 degrees before dropping to 105 on Tuesday and 102 on Wednesday.

The mercury should remain at 102 degrees on Thursday before predictions call for slight increases to 103 on Friday, 104 on Saturday and 105 on Sunday.
