PHOENIX – Mick McGuire isn’t getting as much media attention as other Arizona Republican candidates for U.S. Senate, but he likes his chances in the upcoming primary election.

McGuire jokingly told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show on Monday that stories will say “Brnovich, Lamon and Masters lost” if he wins the Aug. 2 primary.

Exchanges between venture capitalist Blake Masters and businessman Jim Lamon dominated the headlines after a candidate debate last week, but McGuire came away pleased with his performance.

“We did win the debate,” the retired Air Force major general and former leader of the Arizona National Guard said.

McGuire has consistently polled fourth in a five-man race, behind Masters, Lamon and Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who skipped the debate.

However, he’s counting on the fact that around one-third of likely Republican voters are still undecided, a contingent he plans to win over.

“All the polls are aligning around 35% still undecided, and that guy’s never showed up in an event. … We’re going to outstrip undecided, get those guys to turn our way,” he said.

The Republican primary winner will face Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly in the November general election. The seat could decide which party controls the Senate.

McGuire said “things are going very, very well” on the campaign trail with grassroots groups and the business community.

“We’re getting a lot of people say, ‘I pick Mick,’” he said.

We want to hear from you.
