PHOENIX — We hope you enjoyed this week’s relatively nonfrying temperatures in the Valley because they will be brought to an end by a heatwave this weekend.

The National Weather Service’s forecast called for temperatures in Phoenix and the surrounding area to increase to about 117 degrees by Sunday and remain around there until the middle of next week.

The weather service issued an excessive heat watch that was to be in effect Friday through June 20.

During an excessive heat watch, people are encouraged to drink more water than usual and avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugar. They should also take frequent breaks in a shaded or air-conditioned place when working outdoors.

Children and pets should not be left in cars.

Thankfully, relief from the heatwave could literally be on the horizon.

“The only potential thing that would cool us down is if we had moisture that moves in from New Mexico,” weather service meteorologist Chris Kuhlman said. “That does seem like it could a possibility, but it’s hard to know which day.”

Phoenix saw extreme heat about this time last year. The city hit 118 degrees on June 19.

Though temperatures are not expected to get that high, it’s worth noting the last time Phoenix saw a 119-degree day was 2013.

The city last recorded a high of 120 degrees on July 28, 1995.
