PHOENIX – A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was arrested Monday, accused of domestic violence, authorities said.

Medardo Sanchez, 31, was off-duty when he taken into custody by Phoenix police and booked into the downtown Fourth Avenue Jail.

Sanchez faces counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault against a minor, child/vulnerable adult abuse, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

Phoenix police said a woman told them Friday evening her husband had assaulted her at their home near 35th Avenue and Bell Road.

Officers did not find Sanchez at the house then but detectives eventually developed probable cause for an arrest.

An MCSO spokesman said in an email Sanchez will be placed on leave pending the outcome of criminal charges and the internal investigation.

“MCSO will always be intolerant on criminal behavior, to include circumstances when our employees are accused of unlawful behavior,” the agency said in a statement.

“We are not above the law and will be held to the highest ethical standard that is expected of a leading law enforcement agency.”
