PHOENIX – A group of masked assailants shot a man in the leg and ransacked his West Valley home early Thursday, authorities said.
Officers responded to a residence near 59th and Peoria avenues for a shooting call around 4:40 a.m., according to the Glendale Police Department.
The victim was loading his vehicle for work in his driveway when he was approached by a person shining a flashlight in his face, police said.
He thought it might be friends playing a joke and slapped the light aside. That’s when he realized there were three or four masked subjects near him and the light was attached to a handgun, police said.
The group started physically attacking the victim in his driveway, but he was able to escape and run toward a neighbor’s house. That’s when he was shot in the leg. He hid after getting shot and did not see the suspects again, police.

The masked assailants then entered the victim’s house, where a woman was located. They forced her into another room and ransacked the house, police said.
“It is unknown what was taken, if anything, or the motive behind this attack,” Sgt. Bryan Hoskin said in a media advisory.
The shooting victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for a single gunshot wound that isn’t considered life-threatening. The woman in the home was not injured.
The investigation is ongoing.
