PHOENIX – The man who shot his two children in Chandler over the weekend before taking his own life had a history of domestic violence, authorities said Monday.

A 15-year-old boy and a 5-year-old girl were hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting Saturday night near Alma School and Queen Creek roads, the Chandler Police Department said.

Police said the children are expected to survive.

The father, who was found dead at the scene, was identified as 52-year-old Derek Aaron Tighe.

His 38-year-old estranged wife had an active order of protection against him, police said.

The woman called 911 around 7:50 p.m. to report that her husband shot the children before shooting himself.

Police determined that Tighe, who did not live at the home, entered unannounced with a handgun before he started shooting.

In February, Tighe was arrested in a domestic violence incident after he pointed a rifle at his wife. Police seized the rifle in that case as evidence.
