PHOENIX — A man was shot multiple times in Mesa on Monday night after allegedly swinging a knife at an officer, police said.

The Mesa Police Department said 27-year-old Omar Fernando Lugo-Osuna faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of threatening and intimidating.

Police received a call from a manager at the Circle K at Southern Avenue and Gilbert Road at 9:05 p.m. about a customer who was acting erratically and threatening to kill him.

Officers responded and located Lugo-Osuna on a bicycle near Gilbert Road and the U.S. 60, police said.

An officer attempted to stop Lugo-Osuna, but he ignored the request, according to police.

The officer tried to stop Lugo-Osuna a second time and the suspect jumped off the bicycle and swung the knife at the officer, according to police.

The officer fired his weapon at Lugo-Osuna, striking him multiple times, police said.

Lugo-Osuna was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not life threatening and was subsequently released.

He was jailed at the Mesa City Holding Facility.

It was the sixth shooting of the year by Mesa police and 21st overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
