PHOENIX — A man was indicted for allegedly trying to kill his ex-wife in Surprise, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said.

Garrett Headrick, 26, was indicted by a grand jury on Oct. 25 for attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct, MCAO said.

Headrick assaulted Taylor Headrick in a home near Greenway and Dysart roads on Oct 19, according to the Surprise Police Department.

Police received a phone call from a neighbor around 7:30 a.m. who saw a man allegedly dragging a woman by her hair into a nearby home, according to authorities.

Headrick allegedly slapped and strangled his ex-wife repeatedly and also tried to stab her in front of their children.

Surprise police officers said they knocked on the front door and heard a woman screaming for help inside the home. The officers forced their way into the home and found Headrick sitting on top of his ex-wife as he was assaulting her.

The officers fired “multiple less-lethal bean bag-type rounds.” Police also found multiple knives on the floor near the woman.

She suffered multiple injuries from being assaulted, including lacerations and contusions, and was taken to a hospital and is now in stable condition.

Authorities said Headrick traveled from California and waited outside her home before the assault.

What were the charges for the man who allegedly tried to kill ex-wife in Surprise?

A grand jury indicted Headrick on the following charges:

  • One count of attempt to commit second-degree murder, a class two dangerous felony
  • Four counts of kidnapping, a class two felony
  • Three counts of aggravated assault, a class three dangerous felony
  • One count of disorderly conduct, a class one misdemeanor

Headrick is in jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
