PHOENIX — A man is dead after being pulled out of the water Sunday at Lake Pleasant in Peoria, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 1:33 p.m., 42-year-old Ignacio Quintero Jr. was swimming with his five-year-old cousin at the Fireman’s Cove area of the lake, authorities said.

While they were in the water, the mother of the child noticed the boy bobbing in the water barely staying afloat. During that time, Quintero was found underwater by bystanders who were able to pull him to shore and give him CPR. However, he was unable to be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The mother and father of the child went into the water to pull him out. He was unresponsive when rescued but later regained consciousness on shore after CPR was administered.

The child was taken to a local hospital in stable condition and is now at home recovering, MCSO said.

Investigators said it is unknown how well the victims could swim. They were not wearing personal flotation devices.

At this time of the investigation, there are no signs of foul play or any suspicious circumstances that lead to the incident, the sheriff’s department said.

MCSO detectives are waiting on toxicology reports and the cause of death from the medical examiner’s office.

The investigation is ongoing.
