PHOENIX — A 44-year-old man was arrested at a Buckeye hotel and charged with murder in the shooting death of his son, authorities said Monday.

Wayland McAfee was accused of fatally shooting his 20-year-old son, Tamar McAfee, on Thursday evening at about 7 p.m., according to the Buckeye Police Department.

Officers responded to a 911 call and located Wayland McAfee leaving a hotel room.

The suspect didn’t comply with commands when officers attempted to detain him and a brief struggle ensued, police said.

McAfee, who was armed with a handgun, was disarmed and attempted to grab an officer’s handgun while being handcuffed, according to police.

An officer deployed his taser and McAfee was taken into custody with the help of other officers, police said.

When police entered the hotel room they found Tamar McAfee on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.

Tamar McAfee was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Wayland McAfee was booked into the Maricopa County Intake and Release facility on one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault on an officer, one count of aggravated assault with a control officer firearm and one count of possession of a weapon by a prohibited person.
