PHOENIX – Search crews located the body of a man who apparently drowned at Lake Pleasant over the weekend, authorities announced Monday.

Byron Garcia-Perez, 25, was swimming about 100 feet from the shoreline of the northwest Valley lake on Sunday afternoon when witnesses saw him struggling, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

He went under the water near the 10-lane boat ramp on the south side of Lake Pleasant and never resurfaced.

MCSO Lake Patrol deputies responded to the area around 4:45 p.m. and conducted a search by boat, but they couldn’t find the the missing man.

How did MCSO find man’s body at Lake Pleasant?

The agency later brought in an underwater remote operating vehicle. The submersible device was used to find Garcia-Perez’s body in about 9 feet of water just before midnight.

The incident remains under investigation, but foul play is not suspected.

It was the 13th drowning in a county lake or river this year, MCSO said.
