PHOENIX — Initial reports from the Phoenix Fire Department of a package explosion that spilled chemicals at a US Postal office turned out to be just nail polish remover, per Liz Davis, Postal Inspection Service Public Information Officer.

Davis also noted there was no explosion.

The spill, which happened at the Post Office in Maryvale near Maryvale Parkway and West Turney Avenue, did give off fumes which caused one employee to experience respiratory problems.

The employee was taken to the hospital but is expected to be fine.

The office was temporarily closed while postal inspectors and Phoenix FD responded.

The leak was due to improper packaging and mailing. Davis said the anyone who doesn’t mail certain items properly are subject to civil penalties, fines or criminal charges in the most severe cases.

The facility has been reopened has resumed normal operations.
