PHOENIX – It was supposed to be a light election year for Maricopa County offices, with only judicial branch seats on the ballot.

But that all changed when two high-ranking officials resigned in a six-month span.

In September 2021, Supervisor Steve Chucri announced he was stepping down from his District 2 seat effective Nov. 5, citing political toxicity.

Then in March, County Attorney Allister Adel resigned following a tumultuous tenure.

Thomas Galvin was appointed to hold down Chucri’s seat on the board of supervisors until this year’s election. He is among four Republicans in the running to complete Chucri’s term, which runs through 2024. No Democrats filed signatures for the seat.

Despite a limited time to gather signatures after Adel’s late departure, three Republicans and one Democrat were able to mount campaigns to become metro Phoenix’s top prosecutor.

The primary election will be held Aug. 2, and the general is Nov. 8.

Here are the candidates for county offices who submitted enough signatures to get on the ballot by the April 4 deadline, per the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office:

SUPERVISOR

DISTRICT 2

Republican: Thomas Galvin, Gail Golec, Doug Little, Thayer L. Verschoor

Democrat: None

COUNTY ATTORNEY

Republican: Gina Godbehere, Anni L. Foster (withdrew from race April 25), Rachel Mitchell

Democrat: Julie Gunnigle

Note: Superior Court clerk, justice of the peace and constable offices are also on the ballot. More information on the candidates.

We want to hear from you.
