PHOENIX — Despite winning office in 2020, Democrat Mark Kelly will have to once again run for his seat as a U.S. Senator for Arizona in 2022.

Kelly won a special election over Republican Martha McSally to fill out the term of the late Sen. John McCain that began in 2016.

Kelly’s victory gave Arizona two Democratic senators for the first time since January 1953.

Several candidates from the Republican side have declared their candidacy to work alongside Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who was elected in 2018.

Here’s the list of high-profile candidates, which will be updated as necessary:

Mark Kelly, Democrat — Kelly is the presumptive nominee for the Democrats. He was the fourth astronaut to be elected to Congress. Kelly raised $4.4 million for his reelection campaign during the first quarter of 2021.

Mark Brnovich, Republican — Arizona’s attorney general announced his run in a video June 10. An active opponent of Democratic President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, Brnovich has served as the state’s attorney general since January 2015. He won a second term for the position in November 2018.

Mick McGuire, Republican — McGuire made his announcement in a video released June 8.  He led the Arizona National Guard from 2013 until his retirement in April. He also headed up the Arizona Department of Emergency Management as adjutant general. His military career lasted nearly 34 years and became a familiar face at state COVID-19 press briefings.

Jim Lamon, Republican — Lamon announced his candidacy in on May 2. The executive at Scottsdale-based solar power company Depcom Power is a veteran and a staunch supporter of former President Donald Trump.

Blake Masters, Republican — Masters formally announced his candidacy July 12 in a video. He is an ally of billionaire entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel.

Justin Olson, Republican — Olson, who has been serving on the Arizona Corporation Commission since 2017, announced his intention to run on Oct. 13. He previously represented Mesa in the state House.
