The U.S. Supreme Court is seen early Tuesday, May 3, 2022 in Washington. A draft opinion suggests the U.S. Supreme Court could be poised to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide, according to a Politico report released Monday. Whatever the outcome, the Politico report represents an extremely rare breach of the court's secretive deliberation process, and on a case of surpassing importance. (AP Photo/Jose Luis Magana)

PHOENIX – Politicians in Arizona reacted to news of a leaked draft opinion that suggests the U.S. Supreme Court is ready to overturn the case that legalized abortion nationwide.

Chief Justice John Roberts confirmed the authenticity of the leaked draft Tuesday and said he had ordered an investigation into what he called an “egregious breach of trust.”

Democrats in Arizona showed support for the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade ruling, while Republicans were heartened by the draft’s opinion.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat, said in a tweet, “Overturning Roe v. Wade endangers the health and wellbeing of women in Arizona and across America.”

Fellow Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly said, “If this draft Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe is true, it’s an enormous step backwards for our country.”

Republican U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs said in a statement, “The justices are making the correct and much-needed decision to overturn Roe. v. Wade. … I expect these justice to finalize these efforts to protect millions of precious and innocent lives.”

Fellow Republican House member Paul Gosar called Roe v. Wade “egregiously immoral.”

Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego said in a tweet, “While we don’t know what the Court’s final opinion will be, we do know that women have had the right to control their own reproductive choices for almost 50 years.”

Arizona gubernatorial candidates also weighed in:

Democrat Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s secretary of state, said in a tweet the move was expected and “marks a historic setback in the fight for our fundamental rights across the country.”

Marco Lopez said anyone should have the right to safely access abortion services and that the draft opinion underscores the importance for the next Arizona governor and legislature to enshrine that right into the state’s constitution.

Republican Matt Salmon, who served in the U.S. House, said in a press release, “The opinion being circulated is marked as a ‘draft’ for a reason. However, if this draft opinion is any indication, the U.S. Supreme Court appears primed to save countless babies’ lives by delivering what pro-life Americans have been dreaming about for decades – and I am incredibly grateful.”

The draft was made public Monday by the news outlet Politico.
