PHOENIX — State health officials and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Thursday recommended for the first time residents wear masks in public settings if they can’t properly social distance.

Ducey even brandished a cloth face mask of his own, stating he wears one in public and will continue to do so in the future.

“I want to say wearing a mask when you can’t social distance is good and I am going to wear a mask when I am in those situations,” Ducey said during a press conference.

Numerous examples from Ducey’s own Twitter feed since the start of June show him not adhering to his promises.

That includes around members of his own office.

Ducey also didn’t wear a mask during numerous meetings with front line workers.

Meetings with public officials also didn’t require a mask for Ducey.

Ducey did wear a mask during a tour of the Honeywell facility in Phoenix on May 5, which included a mask-less President Donald Trump.

Neither Ducey nor Dr. Cara Christ, the state’s public health director, wore masks during Thursday’s press conference.

Maricopa County public health officials on Wednesday beat state officials to the punch, recommending metro Phoenix residents wear a mask in public.

The county’s top officials, Marcy Flanagan and Dr. Rebecca Sunenshine, wore masks as they described the county’s rise in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.

Sunenshine even demonstrated how to put on and properly wear a mask.

The Arizona health department reported 1,412 new coronavirus cases and 32 additional deaths Thursday morning.

That increased the state’s documented totals to 31,264 cases and 1,127 deaths.

We want to hear from you.
