PHOENIX – A gunman was killed by police officers after he shot at them from inside a Phoenix fast food restaurant on Wednesday, authorities said.
The shootout occurred at the Whataburger at 28th Avenue and Thunderbird Road.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls about a man entering the restaurant with a rifle just after 11:15 a.m., according to the Phoenix Police Department.
The man, identified as 62-year-old Marion Douglas Joyner, told the customers and employees to leave, and they all vacated the building before police arrived.
As officers were outside working to contain the scene, Joyner started shooting at them from inside, police said.
How long did police, gunman exchange gunfire?
Police and Joyner sporadically fired multiple rounds at each other for about 20 minutes before the exchange ended with his death.
No officers or community members were injured during the incident.
Thunderbird Road was closed between 31st Avenue and Interstate 17 for most of the day while the scene was active.
The investigation into what led up to the shootout is ongoing.
It was the 20th shooting involving Phoenix police in 2024, including 14 times officers were fired upon, according to a department spokesman.
