PHOENIX — A 22-year-old Guatemalan man was sentenced to 2 years in prison on Tuesday for assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol agent based in Arizona, authorities said.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said Pedro Anival Coc-Caal pleaded guilty to one count of assault on a federal agent inflicting bodily injury and one count of improper entry by an alien on June 24, according to a press release.

Back on Aug. 12, 2023, an unnamed U.S Border Patrol agent had stopped Coc-Caal and was about to place handcuffs on him when the man hit the agent across the left side of face. Coc-Caal proceeded to kick the agent in the arm and attempted escape on foot. The assailant was eventually taken into custody when a helicopter blocked his escape route.

District Judge John C. Hinderaker sentenced Coc-Caal and Assistant U.S. Attorney Serra M. Tsethlikai handled prosecution procedures in the Tucson court.
