Woman arrested at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport for alleged fentanyl smuggling

Oct 2, 2024, 8:00 PM

PHOENIX — A Goodyear woman was arrested after allegedly trying to smuggle fentanyl worth $120,000 through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport last month, authorities said.

Martisha Missouri Montgomery, 24, was arrested at the airport shortly before midnight on Sept. 16.

She had been trying to travel to Atlanta from Phoenix.

Before her arrest, Montgomery was found to have brought a massive amount of drugs to the airport through her checked luggage, arrest documents said.

In fact, authorities seized six kilograms of powdered fentanyl as well as 50,000 fentanyl pills during the arrest, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) discovered Montgomery’s crimes while she was going through a security screening, police said.

Phoenix Police’s airport officers allegedly found six vacuum-sealed bricks of fentanyl in Montgomery’s checked luggage.

TSA discovered her smuggling attempt while her luggage was being X-rayed, according to arrest documents.

The hidden packages looked to be double sealed in plastic bags meant for storing food that were wrapped in tape.

The drugs had been packaged in a way that suggested they were meant for sale and transportation, arrest documents said.

The suitcase full of hidden drugs was one of two checked bags Montgomery had processed at the Delta Airlines ticketing counter, according to arrest documents.

Montgomery refused to answer questions about why she had been traveling, arrest documents said.

Montgomery was arrested on one count of transporting narcotic drugs.
