PHOENIX — A suspect was killed Wednesday in an exchange of gunfire with Glendale police after an hourslong standoff, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area of 56th Avenue and Thunderbird Road after a man showed up at a residence in violation of an order of protection, according to the Glendale Police Department.

Neighbors who knew about the protection order called police.

A woman was inside the home with a child when the man arrived, but they managed to escape, leaving the suspect inside.

The suspect, a 37-year-old man whose name was not released, was armed and threatening himself and officers, police said.

Police negotiated with the man for several hours, but he wouldn’t surrender. He shot at officers several times during the negotiations, police said.

How did standoff with Glendale police end?

Eventually, SWAT units breached windows and doors in an effort to end the standoff with non-lethal methods.

However, the suspect exited the residence and shot at an officer, police said. The officer returned fire, fatally injuring the man.

The Surprise Police Department is investigating the Glendale police shooting as part of the West Valley Incident Response Team.
