PHOENIX — Veteran Glendale firefighter Mark Fowl died Monday after a yearlong battle with brain cancer, the city announced.

“Our hearts are truly broken as we navigate the loss of our brother, Mark”, Capt. Ashley Losch, Glendale Fire Department public information officer, said in a press release.

Fowl joined the department in January 2002 and was working the C shift on Engine 156 in his most recent assignment.

He is survived by a wife and two children.

Details about funeral arrangements will be announced when they are set.

“As a beloved member of our department, Mark will be deeply missed and we will do our best to honor him and his family,” Losch said.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff Wednesday to honor Fowl.

“Mark battled brain cancer with the same strength and courage that he showed Arizonans everyday, protecting our communities,” Ducey said in a press release. “He will be remembered for his bravery.”

We want to hear from you.
