Fourth of July weekend sees decrease in Arizona DUI arrests

PHOENIX – With less people taking to the roads over the Fourth of July weekend, the number of DUI arrests across Arizona were drastically down compared to 2019’s numbers.
From July 3 to 5, 193 people were arrested in Arizona on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
Of those arrests, 51 were for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.
Compared to the holiday weekend last year, 512 arrests for DUI were made with 141 being for extreme DUI.
The average known BAC of those arrested over the weekend was .159. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.
The report also noted that 65 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.
Law enforcement conducted a total of 5,240 traffic stops. In 2019, officers made 15,174 traffic stops over the holiday weekend.
The drop in stops and arrests comes as less people took to the roads as coronavirus cases continue to soar in Arizona. On Monday, state health officials reported 3,352 new cases, pushing the state’s total to 101,441 confirmed COVID-19 cases.
