PHOENIX — More than 50 firefighters battled what was believed to be a hazardous materials fire in downtown Phoenix on Saturday morning.

The second-alarm blaze started at approximately 6:30 a.m., according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, located near the intersection of Central Avenue and Jackson Street, they witnessed heavy smoke coming from the interior and roofline of a two-story commercial building.

A hazmat crew was dispatched to the scene, due to placards on the outside of the building. The crew metered the area and tested the water. All readings were normal.

The owner of the burning structure told the fire department that operations in the building ended two years ago and there were no hazardous materials inside the building.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was still to be determined.

Multiple surface streets in the area were closed as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire from an elevated position.

Extensive overhaul will be conducted by firefighters throughout the day to extinguish all remaining hotspots.

We want to hear from you.
